Snow Stability

### LAST BULLETIN OF THE SEASON

Typical Avalanche Situation

Wet Snow / Rain / Temperature Problem

Wet Snow / Rain / Temperature Problem

Warming or rain weakens the snowpack, leading to wet-snow avalanches.

LAST BULLETIN OF THE SEASON

  • Skier-triggered avalanches:
  • Slide under skis in the surface wet snow. When cutting a steep slope, above 2700/2900m. Size 1.
  • Small wind slab still possible (but very rare). Very steep north-facing high mountain slopes, above 3200/3400m, may still have some dry snow. Watch for changes in snow quality over short distances.
  • Natural avalanches: Rare isolated and superficial releases (pear-shaped) in wet snow after warming. Mostly on north/northeast-facing slopes above 2800/3000m. Size 1 (small).

Snow Quality

Snowpack and Coverage

  • Snow cover: Deficient for the season following the recent heatwave.
  • Skiable limit: Around 2200m on north-facing slopes, 2700/2800m on south-facing slopes on gentle slopes.
  • Snow quality: Poor refreeze below 3000m, better above. Recent snow is crusted at dawn on all aspects/altitudes. With the sun, it softens and quickly becomes sticky/heavy.
  • Only on very steep north-facing high mountain slopes (like the north face of Tsanteleina) can one hope to find some cold snow.

Weather Forecast

Sun gradually obscured in the morning. Threatening in the afternoon, summits overcast and late thunderstorms. Max +7 DG at 3000m.
