Snow Stability

LAST BULLETIN OF THE SEASON: SNOWPACK OFTEN STABLE

Typical Avalanche Situation

Snowdrift / Wind Slab (Wind-drifted Snow)

Snowdrift / Wind Slab (Wind-drifted Snow)

Wind transports snow and builds hard slabs on leeward slopes.

Wet Snow / Rain / Temperature Problem

Wet Snow / Rain / Temperature Problem

Warming or rain weakens the snowpack, leading to wet-snow avalanches.

Avalanches Triggered by Skiers

  • Thin surface slabs may persist on sufficiently steep north to northeast-facing slopes, above approximately 3400m, within the 15 to 30cm of recent snow.
  • In warming snow, small wet slides are possible under skis when cutting a steep slope.

Spontaneous Avalanches

  • Unlikely, or a rare surface slide, on north/northeast-facing slopes above 3500m. Last bulletin of the season. The Grenoble team wishes you a great summer! See you next year!

Snow Quality

Snowpack Qualification

  • Snow cover is rather below average for the season. After a fairly well-covered mid-winter, snowpack melt was particularly rapid in spring, with a warm and dry April, and a scorching end to May...
  • Snowfall events associated with the cooler period in early May only provided short-lived relief for the snowpack.
  • Snow cover remains at best adequate in certain north-facing high-altitude couloirs.

Skiable Limits

  • 2400/2600m in north couloirs, 3000m on south-facing slopes.
  • On foot, snow patches still numerous from 2000/2200m on north aspects.

Snow Quality Monday

  • Below 2900/3100m: wet corn snow.
  • Above 3100/3200m: A small layer of heavy, wet recent snow, resting on corn snow. Crusted at the start of the morning, then rapid warming.
  • Above 3500m: Possibility of finding some cold snow on sufficiently steep north-facing slopes.

Weather Forecast

Sunny morning. Some clouds building in the afternoon, then showers moving into the massif late afternoon/evening.
