Typical Avalanche Situation
Wet Snow / Rain / Temperature Problem
Warming or rain weakens the snowpack, leading to wet-snow avalanches.
Avalanches Triggered by Skiers
- Slide under skis in the wet surface snow. When cutting a steep slope, above 2700/2900m. Size 1.
- Small wind slab still possible (but very rare). Very steep north-facing high mountain slopes, above 3200/3400m, some dry snow might persist. Watch for changes in snow quality over short distances.
Spontaneous Avalanches
- Rare isolated and superficial releases (pear-shaped) in wet snow after warming. Mostly north/northeast-facing slopes above 2800/3000m. Size 1 (small).

- Deficient snow cover for the season following the recent warm spell.
Skiable Limits
- Around 2300/2400m on north aspects, 2800/3000m on south aspects on gentle slopes.
Snow Quality
- Good refreeze, mostly hard snow at the start of the day. Surface warming is quite rapid, but limited by wind (crust).
- On very steep north-facing high mountain slopes (e.g., Grande Casse north face), you might find some cold, wind-affected snow from the west wind.
